Fix SASSA Status Problems Step-by-Step
As a new applicant or an existing SASSA grant beneficiary, you can occasionally see an unfamiliar status on the authorized portal. After receiving a SASSA status that leaves you unsure of what to do next, here are the step-by-step solutions you need to follow to resolve your specific status, restore your eligibility, and avoid unnecessary payment delays.
Identity Verification Failed
Your status shows Identity Verification Failed because your ID details do not match the records held by the Department of Home Affairs. SASSA’s system automatically checks your identity against Home Affairs and other government databases during the verification process.
To fix this, SASSA will send you an SMS containing a secure link to complete your SASSA identity verification online through the eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) process. This link expires within 3 days, so you need to act on it quickly.
Using the link on your smartphone, you will be required to submit a live selfie and your fingerprints to confirm your identity biometrically.
After submitting your biometrics, you can now check your SASSA e‑KYC status online at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/ekyc/status. You will need to enter your credentials on the SASSA SRD portal to view your current e‑KYC status.
If your status is successfully updated to verified, your application will move forward, and you should receive grant payments. If it is pending, you must wait. If it is not verified, you need to correct your details in person at a SASSA office, and this will resolve your identity issue.
SASSA Referred Status
SASSA’s automated system has referred your case to the SAFPS for further verification because your ID number has been flagged for fraudulent activity in the South African Fraud Prevention Service database.
The most common reason for a referred status is if you have recently changed your name or surname due to marriage or divorce, or if you are still using the old green barcoded ID document.
Other reasons for the Referred status include the following.
- Your personal details do not match government database records
- Duplicate applications detected under your ID or phone number
- SAFPS fraud risk screening flagged your ID details
- Incomplete or incorrect personal information submitted
- Your bank details changed or could not be verified
To fix your SASSA Referred Status, you need to complete your biometric identity verification. SASSA will send you an SMS with a link to verify your identity online. If you do not have a smartphone, visit your nearest SASSA office in person.
Bring your original ID document when you go to the office. A SASSA representative will take your fingerprints and capture your photograph to verify your identity biometrically and update your record on the system.
If any of your information requires correction, the SASSA representative will update it on the system. Once your identity is verified, your application will be processed, and your grant will be paid monthly, provided you remain eligible.
Means Test Income Source Identified
SASSA Means Test system detected a large deposit amount into your bank account that exceeds the income threshold for your grant type, even if you have no formal job.
SASSA considers the following as income:
- A family member or friend deposited money into your bank account.
- Someone sent you a gift, money, a refund, or a loan repayment.
- Used a shared bank account where another person’s money reflects on your profile.
- Received an e-wallet payment that pushed your total income above the threshold.
To fix this, check your account and ensure your bank balance does not reflect above the threshold limits. SASSA re-checks your account every month, so if your income falls below the limit the next month, your eligibility will be reconsidered, and your grant will be approved and paid.
To remain eligible for the SRD R370 grant, your total monthly income must be below R624. Other SASSA grants have their own income and asset limits, calculated annually based on the applicant’s and their spouse’s combined income and assets.
Bank Details Pending
This status means SASSA received your social grant application or SRD R370 grant reapplication, but no banking details or payment preference were submitted. SASSA cannot pay you until a valid payment method is loaded on the system.
To resolve this, submit your banking details online. You can either provide your personal bank account details or select an alternative payment option such as a SASSA card or retail payment point.
Your bank account must be active, and the account name must match the name on your SASSA application. If it does not, or if you submit someone else’s account, your bank verification will fail, and SASSA will reject your payment.
Make sure the bank account belongs to you personally, because SASSA does not pay into someone else’s account. Once your banking details have been confirmed and verified, SASSA will process your grant payment directly into your bank account and notify you through SMS to your registered cellphone number.
Approved But No Payment Received
One of the biggest reasons for approval without receiving payment is that SASSA does not have your correct banking details. Other common reasons for an unpaid SASSA grant include:
- Your identity is not verified
- Your provided bank account belongs to someone else
- Your cellphone number has changed or blocked
To receive payment for your approved grant, visit the SASSA SRD website at sassa-srd.com and follow the full process to update your payment method.
For pending eKYC verification, follow the link SASSA sends via SMS to your registered cellphone number to complete your biometric identity verification, or visit your local SASSA office in person.
If your cellphone number is lost or compromised, you need to report it to the SASSA toll-free call centre at 0800 60 10 11 and then proceed to the portal to change your number.
Once your details are updated and verified, your payment will be processed and resolved before your next payment date.
SASSA Debtor Status
SASSA’s audit found that you received grant payments during the period when you were not eligible. You are now required to repay that money before your grant can be continued.
You have been informed through the SASSA Debtor status online, and the agency also sends an SMS with details to your registered cellphone number.
To repay the debt, first visit your regional SASSA office to confirm the exact amount you owe and negotiate a repayment arrangement. Explain your financial situation and request a payment schedule you can manage. SASSA can accept smaller monthly instalments based on your circumstances.
You will be provided with a SASSA bank account for repayment via electronic fund transfer (EFT). The exact account number depends on your province.
If you believe the Debtor status was applied to your account incorrectly, you have the right to challenge it through legal action in the High Court, including judicial review under the Social Assistance Act.
SASSA Status Declined
Your status is Declined when SASSA finds you not eligible for the grant. A specific reason for the decline is always provided alongside the Declined status. You can check the reason carefully before taking any action, as the solution depends entirely on why your application was declined.
Check the most common reasons for a SASSA Declined status and the steps you can take to resolve them.
Declined for Income Source Identified
SASSA’s system detected that your income exceeds the means test threshold. For the SRD grant, the means test evaluates your monthly income against the threshold limits, currently R624. Other social grants have specific limits that apply to both the applicant’s and their spouse’s income and assets.
To resolve this, ensure your bank balance remains below the required threshold for your grant. It is wise to withdraw your grant money after receiving it and not hold 3 consecutive months’ worth of grant payments in your bank account, as this eventually leads to your grant being declined.
Declined for Existing SASSA Grant
If you are already receiving another SASSA grant under your ID number, your application will be declined. SASSA does not allow anyone to receive the SRD R370 grant while also benefiting from another social grant, such as the Old Age Grant or Disability Grant.
If another grant was incorrectly linked to your ID, you can submit an appeal to have it investigated.
Declined for UIF Registration
SASSA’s system found an active UIF registration linked to your ID number. SASSA treats registration with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) as access to government financial support, which disqualifies you from receiving the SRD grant or a social grant.
This can happen even if you registered for UIF at a previous job but never claimed, or if your UIF benefits have already ended.
To fix this, contact the Department of Employment and Labour and request a letter confirming you are not an active UIF claimant or that your benefits have ended.
Once you have that letter, submit a reconsideration appeal and include the supporting proof, clearly stating that you are no longer an active UIF recipient.
Declined for NSFAS Registration
SASSA’s system found your ID number on the NSFAS database. Because NSFAS provides government-funded financial support to students, SASSA treats this as a duplication of benefits and declines your application.
If you no longer need NSFAS funding for education, obtain an authorized letter from NSFAS or your institution confirming you are not a current NSFAS recipient. Once you have that letter, submit a reconsideration appeal and include it as supporting proof.
Declined for Government Payroll Listed
Your ID number appears on the government employee payroll. SASSA’s system automatically disqualifies anyone identified as a government employee from receiving the SRD R370 grant or any other social grant.
If you believe this is an error, you can appeal by submitting proof that the government does not employ you. Acceptable documents include:
A letter from your employer confirming termination of employment
Bank statements showing no government salary deposits
Declined for Age (Not Within Age Limits)
SASSA grants have specific eligibility criteria, and some of them are age-related. As an applicant, if your age falls outside the required range for the grant you applied for, your application will be declined. This commonly happens in the following situations.
- You must be 60 years or older to qualify for the SASSA Old Age Grant and pension.
- A child who turns 18 will no longer qualify for the Child Support Grant and Care Dependency Grant.
- An adult who turns 60 will not qualify for the SRD Grant or Disability Grant.
To avoid this issue, review the SASSA grant requirements before applying and confirm that you meet the criteria, including age, financial status, and other conditions.
If your age was recorded incorrectly due to an error at the Department of Home Affairs, correct your details there first, then reach the SASSA office to update your record.
Appeal for Declined SASSA Grant
If your SASSA grant was declined and you think the reason is wrong, you have the right to appeal for reconsideration. SASSA gives you 90 days to appeal from the day your status showed Declined. That is the official deadline.
- To lodge SASSA appeal, visit the SASSA SRD website page at https://sassa-srd.com/appeal
- Enter your South African ID number and the cellphone number.
- Verify your identity and select the month for appealing when your grant was declined.
- Provide the reason why you believe the decline was incorrect and attach any supporting documents.
- Submit your appeal, and you will receive an SMS confirming your appeal has been received.
After submission, your appeal will be reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). ITSAA is an independent administrative body established under legislation that operates separately from SASSA to ensure a fair and unbiased decision.
Based on how appeals are reviewed, you have a stronger chance of succeeding if your grant was declined because of a system error, incorrect data, or an income miscalculation.
Check SASSA Appeal Status Online
You can use the SASSA SRD website at https://sassa-srd.com/ to check your appeal status online. Enter your ID number and the cellphone number you used when applying, then click “Submit.” Your appeal status will appear on the screen. The system will show you whether your appeal has been approved, declined, or is still being reviewed.
The outcome of your appeal matters. If your appeal is successful, ITSAA will overturn SASSA’s original decision. Once that happens, SASSA will follow the ITSAA order and continue your payments.
Remember: Not all appeals win. If you submitted your appeal without a valid reason or supporting evidence, or if you were found not eligible for the grant, it will likely be declined.
If your appeal is declined and you truly believe the appeals process made a mistake, you have the right to challenge the decision in court. You can approach the High Court for a judicial review within 180 days of receiving the appeal outcome.
SASSA Payment Methods
Once your grant is approved, SASSA pays you through the payment method you selected when you applied or last updated your banking details. To receive your SASSA grant, you have 3 options, but you can only use one at a time.
Bank Account Deposit
Using your bank is the most reliable and recommended payment method. SASSA deposits your grant directly into your personal bank account on your payment date. You can then withdraw your grant money at any ATM using your bank debit card. Make sure your banking details on the SASSA SRD portal are correct and belong to you. SASSA will not release payment to an unverified or incorrect account.
SASSA Card
If you do not have a personal bank account, SASSA pays your grant into your Postbank Black Card, which is also known as the SASSA card.
As of now, the old Postbank Gold Card has been replaced by the new Postbank Black Card. You can receive your new Black Card at Postbank card replacement sites in your province. These are located at authorised SASSA retail partners and Post Office branches.
Once you have your Black Card, you can withdraw your grant at ATMs, Post Office counters, Postbank branches, and supported retail stores.
Retail Store Collection
Other than Post Office branches and Postbank ATMs, you can collect your grant payment directly at SASSA-authorised retail payment points across South Africa. Supported stores include Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Spar, and Usave.
Before visiting a payment point, check your SRD status online and confirm your grant payment dates. Once there, you can use your SASSA card to withdraw cash or use the grant money to purchase goods and utilities.
Important: SASSA has discontinued the Cash Send payment method. You can no longer receive your grant via money transfer or designated cash pick-up points.
Update Your SASSA Application Information
To correct any mistakes made during your application or to edit your current information, allowing you to update SASSA Application online to correct your details. You are allowed to change your banking details, cellphone number, and personal details, such as your name, surname, and address, directly on the SASSA SRD portal at srd.sassa.gov.za.
Update Your Banking Details
This is the most common update. You can switch from receiving your grant via the SASSA card option, through retailers or the Post Office, to directly into your personal bank account.
You need to visit the Change Banking Details page on the SASSA SRD website. Enter your new banking details, including your account name, account number, and account type, then submit the information.
Before submitting your banking information, SASA needs you to verify your identity, which is now mandatory for any changes to your payment method.
Once your details are verified, your account will be linked to your grant payment, and you will be notified via SMS to your registered cellphone number. Remember, account verification and validation can take between 7 and 14 days.
Change Your Cellphone Number
If you lose your SIM card, you must update your contact details immediately. Losing your registered number can mean losing your grant, because your SASSA social grant or SRD R370 grant is linked to your cellphone number and ID number for unique identification.
To complete the process, visit the Change Phone Number page on the SASSA SRD website. There, you have to add your new cellphone number and then verify your identity. You have to perform biometric verification (e-KYC) to complete your mobile number update.
You have to submit a face photo to prove your identity, then SASSA will send an OTP to your new phone number to confirm it belongs to you before registering it on your grant. You can only update your contact details once every 24 hours.
Update Your Personal Information
SASSA allows you to change only your surname and residential address online. All other personal information must be corrected at your nearest SASSA office.
- You need to visit the SASSA portal at srd.sassa.gov.za.
- Scroll down to the ‘Request Name and Surname Update’ section.
- Enter your ID number, name, and surname exactly as they appear on your new ID book or Smart ID card.
- Click Submit to complete the process and wait for an approval message on your phone.
Make sure your ID number, first name, and surname match exactly what appears on your South African ID document or Smart ID card and correspond with the Department of Home Affairs records.
If your name or surname is incorrect in the DHA records, particularly after a marriage or divorce, you must first correct your personal details at the Home Affairs office before reaching SASSA to update your record.
What is SASSA?
SASSA stands for the South African Social Security Agency. It is a government-funded agency responsible for managing and paying social grants in South Africa. SASSA grants are means-tested and are paid to eligible citizens, permanent residents, asylum seekers, and refugees who need financial assistance. Currently, there are eight grant types, which include the Older Persons Grant, War Veterans Grant, Disability Grant, Care Dependency Grant, Grant-in-Aid, Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant, and the COVID-19 SRD R370 grant.
How to Apply for a SASSA Social Grant Online?
You can apply for permanent SASSA grants, such as the Older Persons, Disability, or Child Support Grant, online through the authorized SASSA Services Portal at services.sassa.gov.za. To begin your SASSA online application for a specific social grant, you’ll need to create an account on the portal using your ID number and cellphone number. Follow the steps to provide your personal details, upload the required documents, and submit your application form. After submission, you will receive a reference number. Keep it safe to track your application.
How to Apply for the SRD Grant Online?
You can apply for the SRD R370 grant online using the self-service portal srd.sassa.gov.za. To complete your SASSA R370 application, you will need to provide your Smart ID card number, cellphone number, and other required details. You must also provide your residential address and banking details where you want to receive the grant payment. Once you have filled in everything correctly, submit your application. You will receive an SMS confirmation, and you can check your status anytime on the SASSA SRD website at sassa-srd.com using your ID and phone number to confirm your approved grant payment.
Why Is My SASSA Status Still Pending?
If your SASSA Status Pending, it means SASSA is still verifying your application. This can include income checks, identity confirmation, or system delays. For new applications, SASSA can take up to 3 months to process. During this time, your status will stay pending until a final decision is made. To stay updated, you need to check your status online. If SASSA needs documents or needs to verify your identity or banking details, you will be notified via your status and by SMS on your registered cellphone number.
How Long Do SASSA Payments Take After Approval?
After your grant is approved, you will be paid on the scheduled payment date. SASSA deposits your grant directly into your bank account on that payday. However, depending on your bank, the transaction can take 2 to 3 days to reflect. If you do not have a bank account, your grant will be paid through your SASSA card. You can withdraw the money at Postbank ATMs or at authorised retailers, including Pick n Pay, Checkers, Shoprite, Spar, and Usave.
Application Approved but No Payment Date?
If your application is approved but you haven’t been paid, it could be for one of two reasons. First, your bank account can still be awaiting verification, which usually takes time. Second, if your approval came late in the month, your payment will be rolled into the next month’s payment date. In that case, you will need to wait until then. While waiting, you can confirm that your banking details are accurate by visiting the same page you used to apply or update your information. Once SASSA completes the verification, you will be paid.
Why Am I Approved but Still Not Paid?
Check your SASSA status online at https://sassa-srd.com to confirm your grant is approved for the month. If it’s approved with no pending banking details or verification issues, check your banking app and look for the transaction. Sometimes the payment is received in the bank, but no SMS is sent, which you can verify by contacting your bank. Once you’re assured you haven’t been paid, call the SASSA helpline on 082 046 8553 to enquire. There should be a system glitch on SASSA’s side.
How to Contact SASSA for Grant-Related or Payment Issues
You can contact SASSA to enquire about delayed or unpaid payment or grant-related issues. The easiest way is to call the toll-free SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11. You can also send an email to grantenquiries@sassa.gov.za or send a WhatsApp message to 082 046 8553 to receive important support. For issues that need in-person help, visit your closest SASSA office. You can find office locations on our SASSA contact page.
