SASSA Card Renewal Process
If your SASSA card has expired, you must renew it to ensure uninterrupted access to your monthly grant payments. The SASSA Card Renewal process is simple, and you only need your valid South African ID document and your existing card. To apply for a new card, simply visit a Postbank office, Post Office, or a designated retailer location in person.
SASSA Card Renewal Process
Your SASSA Card Renewals and Replacements are handled directly by Postbank, not SASSA.
To locate the nearest card-replacement sites, dial * 120 * 355 # on your cellphone. Select your Province and Municipality, and you’ll receive an SMS with the location of the closest office that issues the new Postbank Black Card.
Postbank authorised partners include the South African Post Office (SAPO), Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Boxer, Pick n Pay, and Spar. To proceed, follow these steps carefully.
- Dial * 120 * 355 # to confirm the nearest authorised site for SASSA card renewal.
- Take your South African ID card and go to the official card renewal site.
- Inform the staff that you want to renew your card and get a token.
- Verify your identity using your South African ID card and biometrics (fingerprints).
- The Postbank representative will immediately issue you a new Postbank Black Card.
- Once collected, your new Postbank Black Card is ready for use once activated.
The Postbank representative will guide you through creating and setting a new Personal Identification Number (PIN) at a Postbank ATM to ensure your card’s security.
Your PIN is required to authorise all transactions made through your card. For your first contactless transaction, you’ll need to enter your PIN as a security measure.
Once activated, you can now use your new card for monthly grant payments and use it at any ATM, point-of-sale machine at retailer shops, or any other location that accepts a bank card.
Important: Beneficiaries who are disabled or bedridden can request a home visit for card renewal and replacements. You can contact SASSA Customer Care at 0800 60 10 11 or Postbank at 0800 53 54 55 to arrange home assistance.
How Much Does it Cost to Renew My SASSA Card?
Renewing your SASSA card is free of cost. There is no fee for renewal or migration to the new Postbank Black Card. This service is completely free when done through an authorised card replacement site. Your first SASSA card replacement or renewal within 12 months is free of charge. However, if you lose your card again within the same year, a small fee of R26 will be deducted from your next grant payment.
Alternative Payment Options for SASSA Beneficiaries
If you prefer not to use the new Postbank Black Card, you have the option to switch your grant payments to a personal bank account. To do this, you’ll need to complete the ‘Change Bank Details‘ form online at the SASSA website. This process includes your bank account information. Once your payment method is updated, SASSA will deposit your future grant payments directly into your bank account.
Important Reminder
- Never share your PIN or card details with anyone, including SASSA staff.
- Any request for a “card renewal fee” is a scam.
- Always renew or replace your card only at an official Postbank or SAPO branch.
