SASSA Declined Status

SASSA Declined Status means your application has been rejected because your circumstances do not meet the eligibility requirements for the SRD R370 or any other social grant. This applies to new applications or current month grant payments. If you believe this decision is incorrect or mistaken and you meet the qualifying criteria, you have the right to lodge an appeal with the Independent Tribunal (ITSAA) for reconsideration.

Check Your Declined Reason with SASSA Status Online

To know the precise reason why your grant application has been declined by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), you need to check your SASSA status online using the official website.

  1. Visit the SASSA Status Check website. https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status
  2. Enter your ID number and the cellphone number used in your application.
  3. Click Submit to view your status for the decline reason provided by SASSA.

Your status result allows you to confirm the declined reason, as each declined status is linked to a specific eligibility or verification check that must be addressed individually before pleading.

Fix Your SASSA Declined Status with a Formal Appeal to ITSAA

If you believe SASSA declined your application by mistake, you have the right to submit an appeal. It is a formal request to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) to review SASSA’s decision. Because the ITSAA is independent, they review your case without influence from SASSA.

Before proceeding, check your decline reason using the SASSA status checker, as explained above. If the reason is related to missing or incorrect information, such as your name and surname spelling, mobile phone number, or bank account details, you must “Update your Application” online and wait for the status to refresh.

You can submit your appeal within 90 days from the date your SASSA application status changed to “Declined” if the decision was due to system errors, income checks, identity mismatches, or incorrect assumptions about your situation. Follow the accurate steps below to resolve your declined grant status.

  1. To submit a SASSA appeal, visit the portal page: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal
  2. Follow the given instructions and provide your required details.
  3. Enter your South African ID number and the mobile number you used to apply for the SASSA grant.
  4. Verify the OTP PIN and enter it when it arrives on your phone.
  5. Select the declined month and provide your reason for SASSA grant reconsideration.
  6. You can request each declined month separately and each declined grant application separately.
  7. Submit and wait for ITSAA to review your request.

Reasons for SASSA Status Check Declined

You can read the meaning of each SASSA status that results in your grant being declined. These are the official reasons SASSA provides when a new application is unsuccessful or an existing grant is declined after failing the eligibility checks.

Alternative Income Source Identified

Your bank balance exceeds the allowed income threshold for your grant type. For the SASSA SRD grant, the threshold is R624 per month. Other social grants have higher income limits, which are assessed through the SASSA Means Test. To avoid your grant being declined in future months, reduce your bank funds to the allowed limits.

Identity Verification Failed

SASSA could not verify your identity because the Name, Surname, or ID number you provided does not match the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) database. To fix this, you need to reverify your identity online or at a local office and update your application with the correct personal details to resolve the temporary decline.

Existing SASSA Grant

You are already recorded as a beneficiary of an SRD R350 grant, Child Support grant, Care Dependency, Old Age Pension, or any other social grant. Under the Social Assistance Act, you cannot receive two different government grants at the same time. You must cancel duplicate applications or an active grant that is no longer needed.

NSFAS, SARS, or UIF Registered

SASSA cross-checks your records with other government departments and has found that your ID is registered for the UIF, SARS, or the NSFAS funding. If you are no longer receiving these benefits, you can cancel the relevant registration before you become eligible for a SASSA grant.

Detected Government Payroll

Your ID is registered in PERSAL, the South African government’s payroll system. SASSA has detected that you are a public servant and has therefore declined your application. To qualify for the grant, you must submit a letter of termination to SASSA, proving that you are no longer employed in the government sector.

Banking Details Problem

If your banking details do not match, for example, an incorrect account number or branch code, or if the account is not registered in your own name and ID number, the system cannot process payment to an unverified account.

You can change banking details online for SASSA to pay your grant into a bank account registered in the applicant’s name. Using someone else’s bank account will cause your grant to be declined until the details are corrected.

Age Outside Range

You do not meet the age criteria for the specific grant you applied for. Most SASSA grants are restricted to specific age groups. For example, the SRD R370 grant is for those aged 18 to 60. If you are over 60, you must apply for the Older Persons Grant instead.

Debtor Flagged

You have been identified as a Debtor because the SASSA audit determined that you were paid in previous months for which you were not eligible. Under Section 10.1 of the Ministerial Directions, SASSA is legally mandated to recover these irregular payments. This is done by declining your current approved grant until the debt is fully recovered. You cannot appeal this, instead visit the nearest SASSA office with 3 months of bank statements to verify the debt or discuss a dispute.

SASSA Referred Status

Your ID or phone number has been flagged for Suspicious Activity or potential Fraud by SASSA’s security system. This occurs if you have changed your personal information, including your name, mobile phone number, or bank details, and that change appears inconsistent with internal security records. You have to complete biometric identity verification or visit a SASSA office with your original ID to clear the flag.

What Happens After Appealing a Declined Grant

After receiving your appeal, the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance will carefully review your details. If your circumstances are found to be eligible, they will approve your SASSA grant and change your declined status to approved. This process can take 30 to 90 days.

You will be notified by SMS or via the appeal status page once a final decision is ready. If approved, your grant payments resume automatically, and you will receive back pay for the months that were declined.

What to Do If Your Appeal Is Declined for a SASSA Grant

If your appeal is declined, the ITSAA decision is considered final, provided a written explanation of why SASSA’s original decision was upheld. At this point, your only option is to request a High Court review, which must be filed within 180 days of the Tribunal’s final decision.

A court case is your last option and is only worth pursuing if you have strong evidence, such as proof of your or your spouse’s income or employment, violations of constitutional rights, persistent system errors despite correct information, or misapplication of SASSA regulations.

Note: Before taking your case to the High Court, we recommend contacting Legal Aid South Africa for representation or visiting a community law center to evaluate the strength of your case.
