SASSA Appeal Online

You can submit a SASSA appeal online if your SRD R370 grant was declined, as your legal right. You have 90 days from the date you receive the rejection message to appeal to the ITSAA. In your appeal, you need to provide a clear reason why the decision was incorrect and why SASSA should reconsider your application. If you qualify for the SRD grant, your appeal will be approved, you will receive back payments for the months you were declined, and your grant will continue monthly.

Who Has the Right to Lodge a SASSA Appeal

South African Social Assistance Act, 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004) gives you the right to appeal if your SASSA R350 application declined and you believe the reason shown on your SASSA status is incorrect.

Using the SASSA status check online, you can find the exact reasons, which can be an alternative income source, UIF registered, NSFAS registered, identity verification failed, bank account verification failed, government payroll registered, or age outside the range.

To make your appeal successful, you must fulfill the eligibility criteria for the SRD R370 grant.

  • Your age is not below 18 and not above 59.
  • Your monthly income is less than the R624 threshold in your bank account.
  • Have a valid ID document, either a South African Smart ID, a permanent resident ID, or a valid Section 22 or refugee permit.
  • You must not be receiving other SASSA social grants or financial support from UIF or NSFAS.

SASSA Appeal Online Process

To appeal online, you have to use your own ID and the exact cellphone number linked to your original SASSA grant application, because the system sends an OTP for verification. Remember, SASSA SRD appeals are considered on a monthly basis. If you were declined for April and May, you must submit two separate appeals. You cannot submit one appeal for multiple months. Here is the complete process.

  1. Visit the SASSA SRD portal. https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal
  2. Scroll down to the green bar that says “Click here to lodge an appeal” tab.
  3. Enter your ID Number and the cellphone number you used when you first applied.
  4. Click the Send Pin button, and you’ll receive an SMS with an OTP code on your phone.
  5. To verify your identity, you have to enter the exact OTP on the site and click “Submit.”
  6. Select the month you want to appeal by clicking on the specific declined month from the list shown.
  7. Then select the valid reason from the dropdown menu why you are appealing.
  8. Click the ‘Submit’ button to send your appeal for review.

After submission, you should receive a confirmation SMS that your appeal has been lodged successfully. It will then be processed, and once the appeal is approved, SASSA reconsiders your application and approves your grant for financial support.

How long does SASSA appeal take to be approved

Your SRD R370 appeal is reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), not by SASSA. This extra step means you will not get an instant decision.

Expect the review process to take 60 to 90 days from the date you submit your appeal application. It can take longer if the department needs extra checks on your income, identity, or bank details.

Once the ITSAA approves your appeal, they send the decision to SASSA for payment processing. You will then receive the missed grant payout for the declined month, and you will continue to receive your monthly grant.

How to check SASSA SRD appeal status

You can track your request progress online using the SASSA SRD appeal status page. You only need to enter your South African ID number along with the cellphone number used during your application. On the same page, your appeal status will show results.

If you receive a pending status, it simply means your appeal is still under review. Once a decision is made, you’ll receive an SMS on your phone, and the SASSA status will be updated online.

Note: If your appeal is rejected, the ITSAA decision is final for that specific month and can only be challenged through the South African courts.
